Spirit Sox USA Client Spotlight with Lisa Riggs (Founder)
What is your business & what problem does it solve for your customers?
Spirit Sox USA customizes socks for organizations to use as a fundraising opportunity, as uniforms, employee appreciation, or just for fun! Because this is a new, creative and (most importantly) fun fundraiser, customers are selling their customized socks more easily and raising thousands of dollars for their important programs.
What inspired or drove you to start this particular business?
A few years back, I was the After School Sports Board Member for our Education Foundation. I came up with this idea to customize socks in order to increase donations and so that we could use them as uniform socks. But I was shocked when I contacted all of my usual contacts only to find that none of them could produce customized socks.
When I finally found someone, his product arrived 6-weeks late and was not high quality. However, the fundraiser was wildly successful, and I saw donations increase by 140% and raised more money than we ever had for our after school sports program. With my experience and knowledge, I knew I could create a simple process with a high quality product to offer to other volunteer parents like me. So I took the chance and just today am celebrating my 1-year Anniversary!
What’s your background and how did it play a part in starting your business?
I have been volunteering and running successful fundraisers for 13-years and counting. With my experience, I was able to build this fundraiser to be simple and efficient to administer while practical and profitable to run. My background also really helps me with my customer service – I speak my customer’s language and understand their challenges.
What is your ideal customer or who can you help the most?
The thing that is great about socks is that they can be customized for anyone or anything! This allows me to help anyone who is looking to customize socks for any occasion.
What were your biggest challenges when you started?
By far my biggest challenge was finding a manufacturer. I actually had a manufacturer all lined up and was ready to launch when they came back and changed the terms entirely on me making it completely unaffordable. I thought my business was over before it started. But then, a friend of a friend referred me to my current manufacturer, and we have been growing together ever since.
One of the reasons it was so challenging to find a manufacturer is quality. So many customized socks you can buy online are low quality and uncomfortable. I knew the only way to have a chance at success was to stand behind a high quality product. This is why I send free sock samples to any potential customers so they can see and feel the quality and comfort of my sox, as well as be confident in the product they are introducing to their organization.
What keeps you motivated to keep working on your business?
My customers are one motivation. I love what I do because I genuinely am helping people. It is exciting to talk to the different customers around the country and see how customizing socks can help solve their fundraising challenges.
Also, my children are my other motivation. I have a son and a daughter, 17 & 15, and I am showing them every day that hard work and persistence can allow you to follow your dreams. But I’m also teaching them about failure and how to overcome it; because let’s face it, there are so many failures along the way of starting a new business. But, it’s how you handle those failures that will determine your success. I hope by living with and seeing me every day it will give my children the courage to not let anything get in the way of accomplishing their dreams.
What are the pros and cons of running your own business?
Pros are being your own boss, determining how you run your business, and taking pride in your successes no matter how small.
A Con I struggle the most with is not having anyone to bounce ideas off of because it is just me. Also, I only have so many talents and running a business on your own means you need to wear every hat – sales, marketing, social media, for example – no matter how good you are at them.
What are your biggest challenges today?
Social Media! It is critical to running a business, but I struggle daily to post. I’m in my 40’s, so I think I’m just too old!
Which resources to run your business do you use most?
Customer Service – this is the most important aspect of my business and my goal is to have 100% satisfied and happy customers.
I also use my CRM to help me keep track of all data and customers.
What are you currently working on in your business? Anything new & exciting?
Well, my sox did recently make an entrance at the California State Capital!
Any advice for aspiring entrepreneurs?
Be persistent, ask for help, and listen. You can learn so much from others who have done this before you – understand and value that resource.
Also when you fail, because you will fail, ask yourself, what is the worst that can happen? Be able to put it in perspective and figure out how to move past it. Definitely allow yourself a “pity party” as I call them, but once that ends, stand up, brush yourself off, and figure out how to move past it.
Outside of business what do you enjoy doing? How do you recharge your batteries?
My family is my highest priority, which includes my husband, 2 kids, dog, turtle and fish! I love anything from simply spending time with them to taking one of our many adventures. I also love watching my kids play the sports they love. I love to exercise and play USTA club tennis for fun. And reading is such an enjoyable pastime of mine.
Describe yourself in 3 words?
Intelligent, kind, giving
If you had 1 “request” of people reading this, what would it be?
Don’t let fear get in the way of following your dreams. Enjoy the journey and where it takes you.

Anything else you want everyone to know?
Spirit Sox USA donates 5% of its profits to charity, providing free Spirit Sox to schools in under-served communities. I am very proud that I just made my first charitable donation of 500 adorable alligator socks to a school and its students that were devastated by Hurricane Harvey. Giving back is an integral part of who I am and this is one of my favorite pieces of my business.
